Maintenance

This page documents visits to the Audi dealer for maintenance work. Audi's factory warranty covers all maintenance costs for the first three years of ownership. Starting with the 2001 model year, the warranty was extended to four years.
All modifications were handled independently at my own expense.

2003

14.MAR

Factory warranty expires today. Let the modding begin! Hmmm, wait a minute...the modding has already begun.

11.MAR

Came back from autocross with what sounds like an exhaust leak. Sound is coming from engine bay. When idling, car sounds like a VW Bus. When driving, a raspy, fluttering air noise can be heard. Noise gets louder with increased boost. Dealer's diagnosis: the gasket on the secondary air injection valve is leaking. Gasket replaced under warranty and car is good to go. However, there were some carbon deposits in the valve, so a new valve is on order, to be replaced under warranty.

07.MAR

Install new 17" wheels and tires. Got a sweet deal on '02 sport wheels (replica) and AVS Sports. Alignment under warranty.

05.MAR (32,445 km)

Final Audi Advantage maintenance service. Oil and filter change with provided Mobil 1 5w-30 -- 3 litres of the new SuperSyn formula and 1 litre of Tri-Syn which I had purchased nearly a year ago. Burned out right side foglight bulb replaced under warranty.
I wanted to swap the snow tires for the original Dunlop 8000E summer tires in preparation for weekend autocross, but the dealer said the tires were too worn (down to the wear bars) and at least one of the sidewalls was badly damaged. Oh well, new tires it is then.

2002

31.DEC (29,007 km)

Left side foglight bulb burns out. Got a free replacement under warranty.
Once again, the dealer washed my car and filled the windshield washer fluid without my asking. Great service!

23.DEC (28,288 km) Low beam bulb burns out. Dropped by dealer to get a free replacement.
Even though it was a quick freebie visit, the dealer took the time to wash my car and adjust the wipers (one arm was skipping) without my asking. Very nice!

29.OCT (26,017 km) Dropped a wheel off the side of the road and knocked the alignment out. Visit dealer for alignment. Summer tires swapped for winters.

19.SEP (24,xxx km) Power lock motor replaced under warranty. Keys need reprogramming, but unfortunately I did not have the full set of keys with me.

12.SEP (24,392 km) 30-month scheduled maintenance. New oil and filter. I brought a 4 litre jug of Mobil 1 5w-30 Tri-Synthetic for them to use. I figure it was about time to make the jump to synthetic.
I had them take a look at the power lock system because the locks seem a little slow. Sure enough, the vacuum motor which drives the locks needs replacing. This will be done under warranty once the part arrives.

22.MAR (19,251 km) Brought the car in to swap the front Bilsteins for the factory sport shocks. Good thing I kept them.
The alignment machine was broken so they couldn't do an alignment. Fortunately, the car tracks straight, so the alignment is probably okay. I guess I'll find out exactly how okay it is over the weekend (first track days of the season - woohoo!)

19.MAR (19,188 km) 24-month scheduled maintenance. New oil and filter. Brake flush. The brake pedal still feels a bit mushy though. The pads and rotors have probably had enough of the abuse I've been subjecting them to.
I also had them look at the front left suspension. In the last 2 weeks I've noticed a clunk whenever I make a hard right turn or going over bumpy roads. Basically, whenever the car leans on the front left, the suspension clunks. The techs confirmed my suspicions: the Bilstein shock is leaking.
Damn it, they forgot to stamp my maintenance log again.

2001

14.SEP (13,726 km)

18-month scheduled maintenance. Oil change plus new filter. I was surprised they changed the filter because the Audi maintenance handbook only recommends changing the filter every second oil change. Complained about a rattle in front passenger door. They said they opened up the trim and "adjusted some cables" but that didn't seem to help much. The rattle is a bit softer, but it's still there. I also had them check for oil leaks because I've noticed a few drops on the garage floor. They couldn't find any leaks. I suspect the oil is coming from one of the Bilstein shocks. A seal may be busted. Squeaky fuel door lock was lubricated. Squeak is gone. Got them to stamp my maintenance book twice--once for the last service and once for this time.

12.MAR (8,932 km) 12-month scheduled maintenance. Oil & filter change. Dealership quoted me an outrageous price for adjusting the height on the Bilstein shocks. They also forgot to stamp my maintenance log.

2000

01.NOV (6,491 km)

Leaking oil filter replaced under warranty.

23.OCT (6,321 km) Rattle in front passenger door fixed under warranty. Also had them check for a few minor problems but they were all either "not reproducible" or "normal".

10.OCT (5,289 km) 6-month scheduled maintenance. Oil & filter change and wheel rotation. Rear-ended on the way to the service appointment. Fortunately there was no damage.

Fuel Consumption

I kept a detailed fuel log for the first 12,000 km. Each entry below represents a visit to the fuel pump. Fuel tank was filled to capacity (60 litres) each time.

Note

The highlighted entries indicate a fill-up following a track event. These entries are not an accurate indicator of normal fuel consumption.

Specification

The specified consumption numbers are: 13.1L / 100km (city) 8.7L / 100km (highway) 11.2L / 100km (combined). The actual consumption that I've observed is very close to the specified values.

Conversion

1 mile = 1.609 kilometres
1 US gallon = 3.785 litres

Formula for mpg to L/100km conversion: 235.24 / x = y
where x is in the original units of measurement and y is the equivalent amount in target units.
For example, to convert 13.1L / 100km to mpg: 235.24 / 13.1 = 17.96 mpg
